Grades

I use these as guidelines when I decide how to review something.

If nothing else, remember that I’m a tough grader. I’m probably going to find something bad to say in even my A reviews, and a B- still means that I’d recommend it if it sounds interesting to you.

A This is excellent, and I highly recommend it. A+ I don’t know if I’ll ever actually use an A+ rating. I review things when they are still new to me, and I think that an A+ should only apply to something that has definitely stood the test of time.
A This work is destined to be a classic. (Well, I’m as sure as I can be without giving it an A+ rating, I guess.)
A- I really loved this. Even if I don’t see/hear/consume it again, it will still have stuck with me a year from now.
B Recommended. If this sounds like the sort of thing you’d like, you’re probably right. B+ Strongly recommended. I think this is a very good work.
B This is a solid recommendation. There were some flaws, of course, but fans of this sort of thing will not be disappointed.
B- A weak recommendation. I probably won’t go out of my way to tell people about it, but if you were to say something that made me think of this, I wouldn’t feel hesitant to suggest it to you.
C Eh. It’s ok, but probably not work the time or money it requires. C+ This was ok. I sort of liked it overall, but I won’t be recommending it to others. If someone else told you this was good, don’t treat my grade as a major argument against it. If not, I wouldn’t bother.
C Pretty bland. It’s not bad, not good, and I don’t plan to think about it much after I finish the review.
C- Though this did have some good points, it definitely disappointed me overall.
D This is bad. I didn’t like it, and will disagree with those who did. D+ I was on the fence for a while, but eventually I had to conclude that this is bad.
D Sure, this may have some good points, but I’m pretty confident when I say that it is still bad.
D- This is surprisingly bad. Not even the redeeming qualities are very clear.
F A truly awful work. I can’t imagine what they were thinking when they published this.

If you map out my grades, they make a bell curve centered around the Bs. This isn’t because I like everything, but because I write this blog as a hobby. If I didn’t expect to like something, I wouldn’t have bought (or borrowed) it in the first place.
